Activities:
The activities that our youth participate in often differ each year with ever-changing opportunities for ministry. However, listed below are a few activities that have been favorites of our youth over the past years.
BEHOLD: A weekend retreat held each January at Camp Sumatanga during the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday weekend. This retreat offers youth the opportunity to participate in contemporary worship, spend time studying Gods word with peers, and reflect upon the impact they are having in their schools and communities by the way they are living their lives.
Sing Out: A spring break mission opportunity for all New World Choir participants. The mission of Sing Out is to take the message of love and salvation offered by Jesus Christ throughout the world in the form of song. Our choir has traveled to numerous places both in the United States and beyond sharing their faith story.
Urban Ministries: For 2 of the past 3 summers a group of approximately 20 youth have traveled to inner city Birmingham to work through Urban Ministries. This week-long mission trip involves scraping, priming, and painting houses for low-income and disabled families in the Birmingham area.
REACH Work Camp: REACH is a mission opportunity for both junior and senior high students to travel to one of several locations for one week during the summer to perform mission work. The work varies from painting houses to roofing to plumbing to putting siding on a house. The focus is not on what type of work you are doing, but on why you are doing the work.
Fundraising: Throughout the year the youth host several fundraising events that help fund the ministries of the youth and the mission opportunities that we encounter. Some traditional fundraisers include Soup-er Bowl Sunday lunch, Sundae Sunday, a Christmas dinner theater, and Thanksgiving Turkey Sales.
Other Activities: Aside from mission trips and fundraisers, the youth often enjoy times of fun and fellowship with one another. Some trips that commonly occur are movie nights, beach retreats, whitewater rafting, or just going out as a group to eat at a local restaurant. We believe that Christian fellowship is an important aspect of spiritual growth and development.
