| OPPORTUNITIES TO SERVE Ministry is Mission! When we think about the gospel of our Lord, we hear the command to go into the world and make him known. Words are not enough. The staff and leaders of First Church are here to help you identify your spiritual gifts, equip you for specific tasks of ministry and deploy you into the mission field. The mission field is the world around us, as close as the church, local neighborhood itself and as distant as the Gulf Coast, Honduras and Ghana, Africa. We have the energy and resources to help others, grow in our faith and make a positive impact on those who we are called to serve. There is a place for you. Below are some of the existing opportunities for service… El Hogar, The Home of Love and Hope in Teguicgalpa, Honduras…We will work in a community of 200 orphan boys who have come from the streets and difficult homes. We will work with local laborers to build new facilities. There will be time to pray and play with the boys. We will worship and share time with faith filled people. The cost including transportation runs about $1200 which will include simple accommodations, food and a donation to the ministry. This mission trip is for adults age 18 +. To learn more check out their web page at: www.elhogar.org Ghana Mission…Our work in Ghana will be with Andrew and Juliana Jernigan who are actively supported in this ministry by First Church. Our goal is to help them establish a firm base for their ministry. Juliana is a physician who is being trained to treat tropical illnesses. We will worship and witness as we journey with the people God has given them. The cost including transportation runs about $3000 which will include simple accommodations, food and a donation to the ministry. To learn more check out their web page at: www.jernigan.typepad.com Reach Work Camp, Since Hurricane Katrina the coast has been dealing with staggering loss. Our youth can respond and make a difference. If you are entering the 7th grade and have a heart to help people, you are eligible. Our week will have Jr. and Sr. High students participating. Adult sponsors are encouraged and needed. With care scriptural teaching as our foundation, we will work for one week to help and restore homes and churches. The cost runs about $380 which includes accommodations, 16 meals, supplemental health insurance, building and program materials and a T–shirt. Org The Sylacauga Area Habitat for Humanity … First Church began working with this in 1996 and has built several homes in the Sylacauga area. Contact us to volunteer for the next project. The Care House provides food and clothing for those in need. It is a joint venture with other area churches. Volunteers staff the Care House, unload trucks of food, sort clothing and distribute the goods to those who need them. Our church brings non-perishable food to the church on each third Sunday and we take our turn staffing the Care House several times through the year. Meals on Wheels are delivered by members and attendees of First Church five days a week. Each person, however, signs up for one or more days each month to deliver the meals. We can always use more volunteers that can help with delivery. Finding your spiritual gift, claiming and using it through the church is an important step in spiritual growth.
