"Two Christmases"

…_____ More shopping days ‘til Christmas (I guess they are all shopping days now!)

…Have a holly jolly Christmas!

…You had better get ready; Christmas is coming

…Have you bought your gifts yet?

We are headed towards two celebrations at Christmas.  One is a very powerful cultural phenomenon.  We celebrate family.  We celebrate our blessings and prosperity through the giving of gifts.  We celebrate the end of the shortening of days and look forward to the return of the light.  Newscasts breathlessly await the report of how much buying and selling has gone on in order to try and measure the health of our economy.  Factories in Communist China have hummed all year in preparation for Christmas in the United States of America.  We are heading for this Christmas.

There is a second Christmas that will be celebrated.  It is coming to us.  We don’t prepare for it by gathering beautiful gifts or by the hyperactive insanity of parties and gatherings.  We prepare for it by laying our hearts bare before the King of holiness as he silently enters our world through the womb of a virgin.  He is coming.  There is nothing Caesar or Herod can do to stop it.  He is coming with a power and certainty that will shake the mighty and lift up the oppressed.  He is coming with a mercy and love that are beyond reason.

Enjoy Christmas in American culture.  I will. Please don’t bury yourself in a pile of debt while you do it.  However, remember the real Christmas.  The Day of The Lord.  The one is fun or misery depending on the year.  The other, the quiet one, is a matter of life and death.

Jesus is…Son of God, Son of Man, Savior, Lord, Redeemer, Older brother, God of God, Light from Light, Begotten not made…so what?

We say that Jesus is truly unique.  We say that he is the most important person who ever lived.  We have developed Creeds that strive mightily to express what is truly significant about Jesus.

In the next weeks we will examine who Jesus is and what that means for us as his followers.  Why it matters to us and why it matters to the world.  Our response to Jesus is the most important dimension to human living.  That is what determines whether we are building on shifting and unstable sands or on a solid rock.

Come Sunday mornings to pick up some ideas that just might make a difference.  Join an application group to get deeper into the word with fellow believers.  It matters.

The best sermon I'll ever preach is coming Sunday.  It is a version of the Sermon on the Mount.  It is the best I'll ever preach because it isn't mine, it's Jesus' sermon.  We talk a lot about Jesus being the only way.  I agree with that.  However, I'm pretty sure that we are more confident that Jesus is the only way to heaven than we are that Jesus' way of living is even something we ought to try to do.  He's not the way if his way isn't the way of life God has chosen for us. If you don't get uncomfortable listening to the Sermon on the Mount you aren't listening very closely.  It truly pierces to between the bone and the marrow of our hearts and soul.  It lays us bare to the way of the cross…

People are looking for a way to live.  Jesus gave us that way and we can't do it by ourselves.  Our friends and neighbors are looking for that way.  Christ's way of living is truly natural humanity. This is true for everyone.  Every one of us have wandered off the path. We are lost unless the Shepherd brings us back to his path.  We invite Jesus into our hearts and we live the rest of our lives attempting to follow him.  We stumble, we fall, we wander but our salvation is on that path.  This I know.  The Bible tells me so.
